Help for Seasonal Allergies

Dr. Michelle Hislop | National Spine Care | Downtown Calgary Naturopathby Dr. Michelle Hislop ND

It’s finally warm enough to turn off the seat heaters and ditch the parka. The sun is shining, and the trails are calling your name. Welcome Spring! … and a begrudging hello to your sidekick, seasonal allergies.

Seasonal allergies also called hay fever, or allergic rhinitis occurs when the body’s immune system overreacts to a substance that is normally harmless. Pollen, dust mites, mold, and animal dander are common allergens that will trigger our immune system and can result in a runny nose, nasal congestion, tearing and itchy eyes, coughing, wheezing, difficulty breathing, and postnasal drip. These symptoms are often easily identified because we experience them at certain times of the year. However, allergies can cause a wide range of symptoms, and the offending allergen is not always obvious. Allergies can affect any part of the body, resulting in an immune reaction and inflammation. Digestive complaints, joint pain, headaches, rashes, and mood changes are just some of those symptoms that could be the cause of a hidden allergy.

As a Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine, I work with you to identify your triggers and support your body. This will help decrease the frequency and severity of symptoms and prevent future allergies.

Solutions to deal with your seasonal allergies begin with identifying and avoiding your specific triggers. This includes identifying unknown, hidden triggers, which may be acting to sensitize your system resulting in over reaction to additional triggers. From there, we go through methods to support your immune system to better respond to your triggers. This may include supplements, nutritional/diet modifications and lifestyle changes that may be the missing link to feeling amazing!
