What is Fascial Manipulation?

Fascial Manipulation is a manual therapy that was originally developed by Luigi Stecco and has been in development for the last 40 years. Fascial Manipulation focuses on the fascia, specifically deep muscular fascia.

What is Fascia?

National Spine Care | Downtown Calgary Fascial ManipulationFascia is the principal connective tissue in the body. It forms a continuous three-dimensional web which surrounds and supports all muscles and organs of the body. It holds them in place to give the unique appearance of each individual. The fascia is arranged in layers from superficial to deep, separated by loose connective tissue allowing motility. The layers are functionally continuous with the other main connective tissues of the body including the muscles, tendons, ligaments, periosteum and bones themselves.

Each layer of fascia is made up of varying proportions of collagen and elastin fibers set within a supporting matrix.

Fascia reaches down deep into the muscles and organs to act as a conduit for many varied nerves and vessels, facilitating metabolic as well as physical support. It is highly innervated and clearly has a strong proprioceptive role, acting as the primary feedback mechanism to the nervous system for control of our muscles and movement. This loose connective tissue also acts as a reservoir of metabolites and can act as a store for the “by-products of illness or excess”.

Fascial Manipulation identifies a specific, localized and abnormal area of the fascia, and through the appropriate manipulation of this precise part of the fascia, movement can be restored and pain reduced. This technique allows therapists to work at a distance from the actual site of pain, which is often inflamed. Compensatory tension may also extend along a sequence of muscles and other soft tissues which could be involved in the referral of pain along a limb or to another area of the body.

What is Functional Myofascial Release (FMR)?

Stress and strain causes our soft tissue to become more dense and stiff. This can entrap nerves and cause pain. It can also result in weakness and poor movement control.

Functional Myofascial Release is a non-invasive, multimodality, soft-tissue treatment process that locates and breaks down densification in the tissue that causes stiffness, weakness, pain, numbness and dysfunction in the body. FMR is used both as a treatment for Repetitive Strain Injuries, and for optimization of athletic performance.   FMR is a manual treatment by which the practitioner approaches the musculoskeletal system from a biomechanical view and using their hands in conjunction with specially designed instruments works at breaking down adhesions restoring proper function.
