Fascial Manipulation (FM) is a science-based treatment which involves manual therapy of the muscles and fascia (connective tissue) to reduce pain and stiffness as well as restore muscular balance and movement control.
Fascia is our connective tissue that is literally everywhere in our body. Old school thinking used to think of it as “filler” tissue that surrounds the important anatomy such as muscles, bones, ligaments, and tendons. New school thinking now considers our fascial system as our 6th sensory organ, central to the coordination and feedback system that controls our movement.
Normal, healthy tissue has liquid lubricant in between our fascial layers which allow the connective tissue to slide against each other as we move. Stress and injury to our tissues causes this lubricant to thicken up, creating adhesions between the layers of fascia. These adhesions can trap small nerves and blood vessels, causing pain and inflammation. The adhesions also change the feedback from that body part back to our brain, which alters our movement control.
Fascial Manipulation is a diagnostic and treatment system that relieves these connective tissue adhesions which reduces pain and improves mobility.
